Background<\/h2>\n

The 2017 General Assembly\u00a0<\/span>established<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>Health Coordination Network<\/strong> (HCN),\u00a0<\/span>(<\/span>previously the\u00a0<\/span>Emergency Department Care Coordination (EDCC) Program<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0within the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) to provide a single, statewide technology solution that connects healthcare facilities, including acute\u202fcare hospitals and post-acute care facilities.\u202fThe\u202fEDCC now includes\u202fMDRO Flags for\u202f<\/span><\/span>Candida auris<\/span><\/span>\u202fand\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Carbapenemas<\/span>e<\/span>-producing Organisms (CPOs).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Goal<\/h3>\n

The MDRO\u00a0Flags\u00a0\u00a0notify\u00a0facilities admitting patients or residents known to be infected or colonized with\u202f<\/span>Candida auris<\/span><\/i>\u202for\u00a0Carbapenemase-producing Organisms.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Facilities should still communicate MDRO status on transfer.<\/span><\/b>\u202fMDRO Flags are not intended to be a replacement of recommended communication, just an addition, as the alerts will only include information for Virginia residents known to VDH and the data transfer is not real-time.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a>\u00a0How it Works<\/h2>\n

Virigina Department of Health electronically verifies\u00a0submitted\u00a0case information. Then MDRO Flags will show up in an enrolled facility\u2019s electronic health record when patients are admitted. Enrolled facilities need to \u201cturn-on\u201d the MDRO flag notifications.\u202f\u00a0Flags may be integrated into a facility\u2019s EMR or may require a separate website\u00a0login.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After flags are turned on,\u00a0<\/span>facilities should ensure\u00a0<\/span>staff who<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>are\u00a0<\/span>involved in infection\u00a0<\/span>prevention<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>receive<\/span>\u00a0alerts upon admission. These alerts ensure\u00a0<\/span>a contact receives a\u00a0<\/span>text<\/span>\u00a0or emai<\/span>l as soon as a patient with an MDRO is admitted.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>
